"Oiseau" Ceramic Sculpture by Jules Agard

Jules Agard (French, 1905 - 1986) was a ceramist and sculptor who collaborated closely with his friend, Pablo Picasso. During the great artist's period of experimentation with ceramics, in the 1940s and 1950s, Agard was Picasso's "thrower"; that is, Agard actually worked at the potter's wheel to make the vessels that Picasso then manipulated and painted. Agard, in his own work, specialized in surrealist figures of imaginary birds and other animals, modeled in terracotta. Offered here is a lovely example of an Agard bird. This piece can be displayed either with or without its original wooden plinth. On the plinth, the piece is 5.75 inches tall; without the plinth, 4.75 inches. The artist's signature is incised on the side of the piece, just above the foot.
