About the Scarab in ancient Egypt: The scarab beetle held significant cultural, religious, and symbolic importance. The scarab beetle, also known as the dung beetle, played a central role in Egyptian mythology and daily life. Here are some key aspects of the scarab beetle beliefs in ancient Egypt:
1) Symbol of regeneration and rebirth: The scarab beetle was associated with the concept of regeneration and rebirth. This connection was primarily observed in the insect's behavior of rolling balls of dung in which it laid its eggs. Egyptians saw parallels between this process and the sun god Ra's daily journey across the sky, disappearing at night and re-emerging in the morning.
2) Representation of the sun god Ra: The scarab beetle became a symbol for the sun god Ra, who was one of the most important deities in the Egyptian pantheon. The rolling of the dung ball by the beetle was likened to Ra's journey across the sky, and amulets in the shape of scarabs were often worn as protective charms.
3) Protective amulets and jewelry: Scarab beetles were popular motifs in ancient Egyptian jewelry...

Ancient Egyptian Monumental Temple Sphinxes
Located in London, GB
A pair of monumental limestone sphinxes of Pharaoh Nectanebo I, from the processional avenue of the Serapeum of Memphis, 30th Dynasty, circa 379 - 360 BC.
The sphinxes of the Serapeum have captivated travellers since Roman times. However, despite their significance, they are conspicuously absent from the collections of most major museums. Indeed, their existence in private hands is so improbable, and their imitations so numerous, that the present sphinxes were assumed to be modern copies throughout their recent ownership history. Finally recognised and conserved after an extraordinary chance discovery at a garden furniture sale...

Egyptian Bronze & Carved Wood Figure of an Ibis Mounted on a Later Base
Located in Hudson, NY
This figure composed of wood covered in gesso and mounted with cast bronze tail, head and legs has been set on a later wood base. The head and tail are finely detailed and engraved. Purchased in the Middle East in 1969 and then brought to this country and remaining in the same collection ever since the statue represents Thoth. The image of an ibis on a perch in hieroglyphics is the image of the God Thoth and thus is a double symbol. Referred to as “The Lord of the Divine Words” he was a favorite of learned men and was considered the god of wisdom, scribes, and the powerful and magical skill of writing. Numerous examples of this form of depiction exist some with alabaster instead of wood some in total bronze and then some bronze mounted with gessoed wood or with the gesso gilded in different states of decay. We believe this to be from a late period approx. 30 BC. It is possible to cite many examples but a specific one is chosen here as it is incredibly similar in size, in construction and appearance to this example sold by Case Antiques Auction...

Very Late 19th or Early 20th Century Egyptian Faux Cat Mummy
Located in Hudson, NY
This object is made to resemble mummified cats worshiped as gods and ambassadors from the underworld. Made in Egypt to sell to the tourist trade but not made as an intended fake antiquity this item is a rare survivor from at least 100 years ago and has now acquired a patina and charm from age and yellowing that gives it a very haunting & spiritual presence. We have seen one other in all our years in the business and we believe that most likely this was made just after the discovery by Howard Carter of the undisturbed 18th dynasty tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun in 1922. The body has a center hard core and is covered in a soft cotton padding but is not a real cat body. The wrappings are nice old linen tightly bound. The head has a form that is attached to the body and wrapped then carefully articulated to show the facial features of the cat with applied stitching to accent the eyes nose and mouth. A final and pleasant touch to complete the look is the string of ancient faience...
