L’ours Pompon (Yves Klein edition) is an iconic sculpture that unites the visions of two great masters. Inspired by François Pompon’s original Polar Bear, this piece is finished in Yves Klein’s signature blue, with authorization from the Yves Klein Archives Foundation and the François Pompon Association.
This edition is based on Pompon’s celebrated L’ours blanc, a monumental polar bear sculpture first exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1922. The most renowned version, carved in stone, is housed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
François Pompon (1855–1933) began his career assisting Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin before dedicating himself to the beauty of animals and the simplification of form in 1905. In L’ours blanc, he stripped away superfluous detail while masterfully capturing the essence, movement, and texture of the animal.
In this special edition, L’ours Pompon is enveloped in Yves Klein Blue—the ultramarine hue with a matte finish registered by Klein in 1960 as IKB (International Klein Blue). This distinctive color was born from Klein’s collaboration with Édouard Adam in Paris in 1954, as he sought a medium that could preserve the pure brilliance of ultramarine pigment.
