This striking pair of carved giltwood dolphin figures mounted on clear lucite bases likely began their life as decorative architectural elements—perhaps once adorning a piece of furniture, a boiserie, or a grand interior fixture. French or Italian in origin and dating to the 19th century, each dolphin is rendered in an exaggerated Baroque manner, with a fiercely expressive face, coiled tail, and highly stylized scales. Vintage pair of bookends feature finely sculpted elongated dolphins with their tails playfully raised in the air. Highly detailed handmade figurines, combining function and decoration, can be used as paperweights or sculptures, enhancing a shelf or table decor with their elegant, attractive forms.
