Pair of Carved Wood Catfish Head Boat Prows on Custom Stands--New Guinea
About the Item
A pair of carved wood catfish head boat prows from Papua New Guinea. This pair of mid-20th century Papua New Guinean boat prows has been carved out of wood and features the head of a catfish. These boat prows are displayed on a custom black iron Stand. The carvings on the prows are quite detailed down to the teeth and textured skin of the crocodile. Villagers in Papua New Guinea would adorn their canoes with such prows as they travelled the inland rivers, swap lands, lagoons and coastal regions of their territories. Papua New Guinea is a very rugged country with few roads so these canoes were an essential mode of transportation. Please note that we have additional catfish and crocodile head boat prows available in various sizes. A collection of these would look amazing a console or occasional table!
