About the Item

A rare and luminous pair of cased uranium glass birds perched on a stylized branch, designed by Antonio da Ros for Vetreria Gino Cenedese in the early 1960s. Crafted using the refined Sommerso technique, these sculptural glass works feature layers of vibrant color encased in clear crystal. Under UV light, the uranium-infused glass emits an electric green glow — a signature and highly prized trait among collectors of historic glass. Uranium glass, also known as Vaseline glass, originated in the early 19th century and became especially popular between the 1880s and 1950s. Valued for its unearthly glow and optical vibrancy, it was used by glassmakers across Europe and the United States to produce decorative and tableware items. Its radioactivity is minimal and considered safe, but its ethereal glow and rarity make it one of the most collectible forms of colored glass today. Antonio da Ros, an influential figure in postwar Murano design, became artistic director at Cenedese in 1959 and brought a distinct modernist and sculptural approach to the glassworks. Known for his deep understanding of form, volume, and color, da Ros helped position Cenedese as a leader among Murano furnaces during the 1960s and 70s. His collaboration with master glassblowers resulted in works that were at once organic, playful, and deeply refined. Cenedese itself, founded in 1946 by Gino Cenedese, was part of a new wave of Murano glasshouses that blended centuries-old techniques with mid-century aesthetics. The firm became known for pushing artistic boundaries while preserving traditional hand-blown craftsmanship. This pair of birds represents not only a technical feat in Murano artistry but also a poetic exploration of color and form. Perfect as standalone objets d’art, they are equally compelling under blacklight or natural illumination — an exceptional find for collectors of Murano, Italian modernism, or studio glass.
