About the Item

Antoine-Louis Barye (1796–1875), Pair of Green-Patinated Bronze Bas-Reliefs: Lion and Lioness, French Each finely cast plaque presents a proud male lion and a sleek lioness in profile, modelled with the vigorous anatomical detail that made Barye the master of the Animalier school. The bronzes retain a deep verde-antique patina and bear the incised signature “BARYE” at the front edge of the integral plinth. They are set on panels of rich, hand-finished hardwood (likely walnut), creating ready-to-hang wall tablets or desk pieces. Crisp casting captures the rippling musculature, mane, and sinewy tails, while the dark green finish highlights the relief against the warm wood ground. Minor rubs to the high points and a few faint surface marks to the frames are consistent with age, but no losses, repairs, or over-cleaning. Dimensions (each, overall): 17 ½ in W × 10 ¾ in H × 1 in D (approx. 44.5 × 27.5 × 2.5 cm). A striking matched duo that brings Barye’s iconic big-cat studies into a versatile, wall-friendly format.
