Rare Finnish art glass object. Sakari Pykälä penguin for Riihimäen lasi
About the Item
A very rare vintage hand-blown Finnish art glass figurine in the shape of a penguin from Riihimäen lasi made by Sakari Pykälä. He was one of Finland's most talented Postwar and contemporary sculptors. As much of his work, this is a piece of art, with partly has a modernist feeling yet it is also very playful. What makes this so special is the craftmanship on display, making these penguins requires precision from the glass blower. It has a fantastic deep grey almost black body combined with a white front.
It is 17cm (6.69") high and around 9cm (3.54") in diameter at the base and in a very good condition. Note that these is a few minor air bubbles yet overall of a fantastic condition and that the price includes free shipping.

Finnish glass art has been made and still is made at factories and studios, where they have produced some of the most iconic pieces, which can be seen at exhibitions and museums all over the world today.
The international spotlight for its Finnish glass art came in the mid 1930's with artists and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Oiva Toikka, Tamara Aladin, Tapio Wirkkala, Kaj Franck, and Timo Sarpaneva. In the 19060s and 70s we also have important designers such as Helena Tynell and Nanny Still among others. However, newer artists are still emerging to continue the tradition in innovative forms.
