Staffordshire pearlware rare Pottery Group of Shepherd and Herd of Sheep, circa 1825 The extremely rare large figure group depicts a large central hollow tree at the back with three large oversized birds perched upon the thick branches, one of which is an owl. The head of a large snake pokes out, its body entwined around the trunk of the tree. Below stands a lone shepherd a staff in his left hand and a bouquet of flowers in the right. Either side of him, an oversized ram and sheep Stand, their heads turned inquisitively towards him as does his loyal sheepdog. Three lambs lie on the base too which is covered with long grass and flowers. Dimensions: 9 inches high x 9 1/2 inches diameter. Provenance: Private New York Collection With Jonathan Horne (1997) Reference: Similar example in Selection from Hope McCormick Collection of Staffordshire Pottery, Emily Manheim. This example has a surrounding wall. English Earthenware Figures, Pat Halfpenny, Back cover for similar example now in Stoke on Trent Museum also with a wall but one large sheep missing.
