About the Item
"Terracotta Cat With Glass Eyes, In The Style Of Goldscheider, Circa 1900 – Austria"
.
A charming and finely crafted Austrian terracotta sculpture of a seated cat, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, executed in the style of Goldscheider.
This life-sized feline figure, measuring 29 cm (11.4 in) high, is modeled in hollow-fired terracotta with exquisite attention to naturalistic detail. The cat is finished with a hand-applied polychrome surface that mimics fur texture and subtle shading, lending a sense of warmth and realism to the form.
Its most striking feature is a pair of inset glass eyes, a hallmark of fine Austrian animal sculpture from this period, adding remarkable depth and a lifelike presence. The underside reveals a typical kiln vent hole, consistent with Austrian production techniques of the time.
Though unsigned, the style, execution, and materials are strongly indicative of Viennese workshops working in the orbit of Friedrich Goldscheider, known for their expressive animal figures.
This sculpture remains in excellent antique condition with age-appropriate surface patina. A rare and collectible piece of Central European ceramic art — perfect for collectors of Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, or antique animal statuary.
