About the Item

Museum quality carved Dachshund sculptures, fine art with a capital F. It never ceases to amaze us how incredibly detailed and life-like some of the work of late 1800s and early 1900s European artisans was. Just when we thought we had sold the best sculpture ever, were we offered the chance to purchase these amazing alabaster Dachshunds. These great quality carved German sculptures had been with the same owner for the last 50+ years and that is why we decided they should stay together. Both were handcarved around 1900 and both are of remarkable quality, but the submissive Dachshund is of such quality and details that, we believe, it should be in a museum. Whomever created this modest size work of beauty not only was an absolute master carver, he also had a great knowledge of the 'soul' of dogs in general and that of a young Dachshund in particular. From the facial expression to the perfect body posture, this little Dachshund simply could not have been better excecuted. Even the color of the alabaster could not have been picked any better. Apart from the two hind paws, that have been glued back (non-professionally) this antique could not be in better condition. The inlaid and equally perfect glass eyes too ad to the great character and realism of this best ever Dachshund sculpture. The Dachshund resting on the divan, to us, could be the submissive Dachshund's grandma, who is resting on her 'Dachshund divan'. There is something insecure or perhaps fragile about this resting divan Dachshund and that too shows the skill of the sculptor who created this particular work of art. This slightly larger sculpture of the two could not be in better condition and it too is of exceptional quality. As shown in image 8, 9 and 10 the submissive dog sculpture is fully marked and the studio where this piece was carved was granted a special medal for art (in 1891). How the other markings relate to this particular antique we don't know, but this certainly is one of the best quality sculptures we ever had the pleasure of offering. The resting Dachshund sculpture comes with a letter M. (the letter of the first name of the sculptor) on the side of the divan. The family name of the artist has unfortunately warn off, because of the many times this rare piece has been picked-up and looked at / studied.
