About the Item

Vintage Murano glass buffalo was handmade by the great glass-master Ermanno Nason at Gino Cenedese e Figlio glass factiory in the late 1960s. The buffalo has an imposing posture with its curving, crescent-shaped horns; it is made in lavender color, to which black 'scavo' finish has been applyed to convey the idea of the roughness of the animal's coat, as well as the mud in which buffalos are likely to spend most of their time. A 24-karat gold leaf has been applied on top of the surface to make this item the more precious, and as a reminder of the sunlight shining on the wet hairs of the buffalo's back. The “scavo” finish was introduced at Cenedese in the late 1940s, and made the company famous, still distinguishing Cenedese's production. This finish, meant to resemble the excavation of archeological remains, is the result of the application of salts and oxidants scattered on the hot glass: the irregular and darker "scavo" spots that purposely cover the piece make it unique. Ermanno Nason (1928-2013) was a prominent figure in Murano glass-making, working alongside world renowned painters and sculptors of his time (among others: Marc Chagall, Oscar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Renato Guttuso, Jacques Cocteau, Jan Arp, Max Ernst and Alexander Calder). More than anyone else, Mr. Nason commingled elements, styles, ideas and techniques: the resulting works escape neat categories and defeat any type of classification, other then an "impassioned research and love for the beauty" (whether of imitative or abstract nature). Animals and the animal world were among Mr. Nason's favorite subjects for inspirations and work. The buffalo is 19cm long and 13cm tall, and is signed "Cenedese".
