About the Item

Armand Petersen (1891-1969). "Antelope, round back" Old and genuine bronze sculpture with a dark patina raised on a wooden base. signed 'A. Petersen' Swiss / French School circa 1930 Armand Petersen was born in Basel in 1891 to a prominent family. He was the classmate of François-Louis Schmied and Jean Dunand in the School of Industrial Arts of Geneva, where he attended the chasing silverware class. Attracted by the artistic effervescence of the French capital, he moved to Paris in 1914. He held a workshop at 9 rue Campagne-Première and was the neighbor of François Pompon. At the declaration of war, Petersen left for Budapest. He met the Hungarian art scene including the animal sculptor Bela Markup he accompanied to draw at the newly opened Budapest Zoo in 1918. Meanwhile, wildlife art saw a nice rise in Paris. It culminated with the presentation of the Polar bear by Pompon at the salon of 1922. It was in these circumstances that Petersen left his profession as an engraver, to devote himself to animal sculpture, and returned to Paris in 1924. He then met his first hit with a sculpture of a Danish dog, Rex, he made editing in bronze by the foundry Thinot. He became a friend of the wildlife group at the Jardin des Plantes, and especially with Edouard-Marcel Sandoz, at the menagerie installed in his studio Villa Alesia. His works were first presented at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925. Widely hailed he continued therefore to be exposed: the Salon des Artistes Decorators in 1927, the Animal Fair and the Autumn Salon in 1928; in France but also abroad, as evidenced by his exhibition in 1928 in Brussels. His Swiss hometown in 1926 chose his monumental project for a public fountain, and then in 1928 a life-size golden stone calf for Solitud Park, a garden for children. 1928 was also the year when Petersen began the publication of his ceramic pieces by the Manufacture de Sèvres. His prints provided regular income to the sculptor thereby allowing himself to produce his bronzes, more precious and more expensive. A contract with the Porcelain Manufactory in Copenhagen gave birth in 1931 to its Arctic animals presented at the flag of Denmark at the International Colonial Exposition of the same year.
