Antique Carved Sandstone Head from Cockermouth

About the Item

Antique carved sandstone head dating back to 1800. This carefully crafted piece has certainly stood the test of time - at 200 years old the details of this distinguished gentlemen are still very much intact. He is a moustached man, with a Victorian look, giving a deep and direct stare. Cockermouth The head originates from the town of Cockermouth, which is located at the junction of the Derwent and Cocker rivers and considered the gateway to the western Lake District and the Solway Coast. The town is classified as an architectural gem with 105 listed buildings, and stone for older buildings was quarried locally. This sculpture is made from Lazonby Red Sandstone, which has a high Quartz content that gives it a distinct sparkle in the sunlight. Additional dimensions: Stone head only: H20.5 x W16 x D17 cm

    A collection of three carved sandstone heads on wood display stands from Northern India Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, circa 11-12th century. Fragmented from large whole-body statue, these red sandstone heads exhibit very fine carving, typical of Northern Indian Art during the medieval time. Two males and one female, they represent heavenly deities Yakshas and Yakshini. Their facial features were detailed with large almond-shape eyes under thin arched eyebrows. The males have characteristic facial hairs including curvy moustaches and tightly combed beard, both finely carved, and the female wears large spoke loop earrings. They all don fantastical hairstyles with serpent-like spiral locks and some with elaborate knots on top and above the sideburns. These deities are likely celestial musicians.
