Antique Bust of Cape Verde Island Native Woman, Colonial Portugal, ca. 1875
About the Item
This exquisite and very unusual sculptural bust of a woman in a folklore Cape Verde Island costume, wearing a coral necklace and a bright headscarf was made in the last quarter of XIX Century; probably, on the Portuguese colonial island of Cape Verde. Due to the peculiarities of the material and realistically rendered image, the skillfully selected colors under the well-preserved glaze are still pleasing to the eye with their brightness and freshness, creating an amazing life-like effect.

- Russian Silver Troika Sculpture, I. Sazikov after E. Lanceray, Moscow, ca. 1875By Ignaty SazikovLocated in New York, NYThe sculpture depicts an elderly peasant, standing to his full height with reins in his hands; behind him in a sleigh are his son and grandson, who drives the horses with a whip. Dressed in typical peasant clothes, all three have very expressive faces. The entire composition of this outstanding silver sculpture, including the original marble base are executed with such high skill that one could imagine the steam pouring out of the horses’ nostrils in the frosty air; and hear the sound of crisp snow under their hooves. The troika gallops at full speed, leaving behind clear traces of horseshoes on the virgin snow. Notes: There are intact little bell on the yoke of a central horse, and an original detachable hallmarked whip. The original, intricately executed marble base is an integral part of the whole composition. The sculpture was never cleaned or polished, and has an original patina. Markings: Fully hallmarked with maker's marks IS (for Ignaty Sazikov...Category

He was the fourth of five children. He was married to Alice Bernadette for over 60 years and they had three children, David, Peter and Christopher. At an early age Fred showed his sculpting prowess as the Ivory Soap contest winner in the early 1930’s. During his contemporary stage, he created numerous sculptures with bold design choices and unique subject matter. Fred’s sculptures reflect both historically significant figures and time periods but he also showed a more fanciful side with sculptures depicting mythical folklore using the likeness of some of his relatives. His subject matter also reflected the people and cultures he came into contact with while a member of the Sixth Air Force Division stationed in the Panama Canal Zone...Category
