Brongniart Children after Houdon by Tharaud Limoges

About the Item

This pair of Limoges porcelain bisque busts featuring Brongniart children derives from a masterpiece of children's portraiture by Jean-Antoine Houdon (French, 1741-1828): the busts of Louise (1772-1845) and her brother Alexandre (1770-1847), children of the famous architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart. Crafted of terracotta, Houdon's busts were presented at the Salon of 1777. Very popular, the two busts were reproduced in bisque, terracotta, marble and bronze. They were acquired at the end of the 19th century by the Louvre Museum. Our Limoges busts are set upon a blue porcelain pedestal, highlighted with golden stripes. The bust of Alexandre is marked inside the base: Porcelaine Limoges France and the bust of Louise: Tharaud Limoges Made in France. Camille Tharaud (Limoges, 1878-1956) is a French ceramist active in Limoges. He is particularly known for his researches on colored glazes. In 1920, he acquired the Louis Tharaud factory in Limoges, where he continued his researches on colored glazes, started in 1915. Tharaud participated in the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925 and in the Salon des artistes décorateurs from 1927. circa 1930 Dimensions: W 4.3 in, D 3in, H 8.3in.
