Diana Bust in Terracotta - Artemis of Versailles early 20th century. Roman goddess of hunting. Copy of the Roman statue of the Louvre "Diana of Versailles". Roman copy 1st-2nd century AD. of a Greek original attributed to the Athenian sculptor Leochares (4th century BC). Patinated terracotta. Measures: Height 75 cm Width 50 cm Depth 35 cm Artist / designer / architect Leochares, about 325 BC Historical period 1st-2nd century ad Material terracotta Museum where the original Louvre museum is exposed Paris Artemis with said doe. “Diana of Versailles” Catalog of the Louvre: MR 152 - Sully room 17 Goddess of hunting among the Greeks, called Diana by the Romans, Artemis is often represented with a bow and accompanied by a doe. Her lunar goddess aspect of her is sometimes evoked by the moon and the stars surrounding her head. She wears here a tunic turned up to the knee in order to facilitate her running. This statue, placed in the center of the hall built for Henry II, is a romantic allusion to the king's favorite, Diana of Poitiers. Artemis (in ancient Greek: ??teµ??, Ártemis), in the religion of ancient Greece, is the goddess of hunting, wild animals, archery, forest and cultivated fields; she is also the goddess of female initiations, protector of virginity and modesty. She daughter of Zeus and Leto and twin sister of Apollo, she is one of the twelve Olympians and her origin goes back to the most ancient times. She was later identified as the personification of the waxing moon, along with Selene (the full moon) and Hecate (the waning moon). Together with Athena and Estia, she was a virgin goddess, armed with a golden bow and arrows, she dwelt in the woods with her reliable hunting dogs and a host of nymphs. In Rome she was associated with the figure of Diana, while the Etruscans revered her with the name of Artume.
