An Italian Antique Statuary White Marble Female Bust BY G Focardi Florence

About the Item

A very well execute female bust in the late 19th century taste, by Florentine sculptor Giovanni Focardi ( signed and dated). Born in Florence and studied under Enrico Pazzi. He moved to London in 1875 ( explaining bust marked Florence not Firenze) and was a portrait sculptor. Focardi was commisioned by Pears soap to produce a piece which was then exhibited at the Paris Exhibition Universelle in 1878.

Born in France in 1755, he settled in England some time before 1786 when he enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1787 he left to study in Rome, with the financial assistance of Josiah Wedgwood. In Rome he won a Silver Medal for Sculpture from the Pope and became an assistant to John Flaxman.
