Largest Hand Carved Solid Nutwood, Renaissance Revival Caricature Monk Sculpture

About the Item

Rare and top quality carved monk bust. Nowadays, anyone capable of making a detailed drawing of a human face is considered an artist (and rightly so). For a person to be able to carve a truly detailed bust with striking facial features out of one piece of nutwood whilst keeping everything perfectly balanced and three dimensionally correct, to us, is amazing. The facial expression of this monk is much like some of the caricatures that can be found in sketch books of Leonardo da Vinci. We have sold a smaller pair of caricature monk sculptures before, but never did we see one of this size and to have found it in museum worthy condition again felt like a blessing. Mind you, this very rare caricature sculpture also is the largest that we are able to find anywhere. This amazing specimen from circa 1890 is also signed, but we are unable to 'decipher' the artist's name. There must be people out there who know this artist, because this work of art is far too good and special for it to be the work of a 'one day fly'. Judging from his less than serene face one could argue wether this monk was god's best servant, but he certainly is unique, all-handcrafted, top-quality carved and in mint condition. With one highly raised eyebrow and one eye half shut this monk clearly has his doubts about the truth of what is being said to him. If you like the look and feel of this striking antique as much as we do then maybe you should be his next custodian. Mind you, this is another one of our antiques that looks much better in real life than in our photos. You can, again, take our word for it. And with a much lower price than what many new artists dare to charge you for much lesser quality artwork, this antique can only be described as great value for money. Also, because our price for this unique and museum worthy sculpture includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. No matter where you decide to have this striking sculpture on display, he will always bring a smile to your face and he will never fail to impress. And when people ask you where you found this unique sculpture then please don't forget to mention our gallery on 1stdibs. Maximum width x height x depth: 15.2 x 12.2 x 9.6 inches. Weight: 7 kilograms or 15.4 pounds lbs. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish & artistic and for the best craftsmanship of years gone by. Your purchases will be extremely well packaged and we look forward to serving you (again).

Finest quality carved sculpture of Jesus with a marvelous patina. This marvelous quality, hand-carved sculpture of our Lord Jesus is among the finest we have ever seen and this truly is a work of religious art. It may be relatively small in size, but both the quality in the details and the beauty of His posture are simply majestic. For the sculptor not to leave his signature on this work of beauty, to us, shows his modesty. We believe that most artists in the religious genre felt that their gift/talent was god given and marking their sculptures, to them, was a sign of too much ego. The highly skilled sculptor must have spent weeks rather than days creating this antique statuette...
