About the Item
Wonderful execution and modelling, with a highly textured and layered technique resonant of other artists of the period such as Lucian Freud. This rare and sensitive period depiction of a subject of the Windrush generation, early pioneers who left their homelands in the Caribbean and worked to rebuild a country emerging from the ravages of conflict, representing the positive impact of diversity across Britain. The two decades that followed the end of the Second World War being one of the most vibrant periods in British art encompassing a dramatic evolution in painting, sculpture and photography that was led by a generation scarred by the war years, who then faced a new unease as the Cold War emerged while rationing continued.
