Italian sculptor 19th century Seneca The base is a piece of an ancient Roman marble capital Not signed by the Author Lucio Anneo Seneca (in Latin: Lucius Annaeus Seneca; Corduba, 4 BC - Rome, 65), also known simply as Seneca or Seneca the young, was a philosopher, playwright and Roman politician, exponent of the eclectic stoicism of the imperial age, or new Stoa, active in many fields, including public life, to which, as senator and quaestor, he gave a reforming impulse. Sentenced to death by Caligula, but pardoned, exiled by Claudius who later recalled him to Rome, he became tutor and tutor of the future emperor Nero, commissioned by his mother Giulia Agrippina Augusta. When Nero and Agrippina entered into conflict, Seneca approved the execution of the latter as a lesser evil. After the so-called "five-year period of good governance" or "happy five-year period" (54-59), in which Nero governed wisely under the tutelage of Seneca, the former pupil and the teacher moved further away, bringing the philosopher to political withdrawal that he had always wanted. However Seneca, perhaps implicated in a conspiracy against him (despite having retired to private life), fell victim to repression, and was forced to suicide by the emperor. Seneca profoundly influenced Roman stoicism of a later period: his pupils were Gaio Musonio Rufo (master of Epictetus) and Aruleno Rustico, grandfather of Quinto Giunio Rustico, who was one of the masters of the philosopher Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
