Stunning Hand Carved Art Deco Era Bust Sculpture of an Olympian w. Laurel Wreath
By Otto Poertzel 1
Located in Lisse, NL
Solid wooden bust of an Olympic champion by (professor) Otto Poertzel (1876 - 1963).
This stunning bust of a young male athlete is of museum quality and condition. Both the geometrical design of the wooden base and the fresh and energetic look and feel of this young male Olympian breath the spirit of the roaring twenties. You will hardly ever come accros a better proportioned, a more realistic or more 'soulful' bust than this wonderfully patinated athlete. It takes an incredibly skilled artisan to be able to create a piece of this quality, because it simoultaniously breathes both energy and serenity. For the mouth, nose, eyes and ears to also be of such perfection makes this antique an...

Pair of 19th Century French Terracotta Busts of Children Signed E. Guillemin
Located in Dallas, TX
Decorate an office shelf with this cheerful pair of antique terracotta children busts. Crafted in Paris, France circa 1880, each subject features a child face sculpture standing on a black painted socle base. Each figure has wonderful facial expressions and nice details. Both artworks are signed on the back E. Guillemin with marks reading "Quai Jemmapes 6". The busts are in excellent condition with the original terracotta patinated finish.
Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (1841-1907) was a French sculptor of the Belle Époque. He worked mainly in bronze and also made artwork subjects in terracotta. He studied under his father, the painter Auguste Guillemin, and under Jean-Jules Salmson. He showed work at the Salon of Paris from 1870-1899, and in 1897 received an honorable mention there. His sculptures incorporated themes inspired by the French revolution, Mediterranean mythology, and orientalist aesthetics. His oeuvre is reminiscent of other mid-18th century European bronze sculptors, including Jef Lambeaux, Marcel...

This marvelous piece of early 20th century workmanship is another fine example of the quality that was made in those days. Roman Portrait Bust of a Noble Woman
Located in London, GB
Roman miniature bust of a noble woman, carved marble, Severan Dynasty, c. 225 A.D.
Rare and particularly elegant ‘wig portrait’ of a noble woman, belonging to the early 3rd Century - a style distinctive of Severan Dynasty female portrait busts, in which part of the head has been chiselled away to allow for the addition of a separate hairpiece, in many cases from a darker material, in order to create an almost painterly effect, in the interplay of different coloured stones. The degree of naturalism and emotional depth achieved in a piece of such a small scale implies a sculptor of great talent. The subtle parting of the lips, in combination with her upturned, vacant gaze and tired eyes, conveys a pensive mood, and even a quiet melancholy.
A woman strolls the town in thick wigs bought with gold,
Then buys new hair to complement the old.
And having bought, she doesn’t blush! Right there she buys,
Before Alcides’ and the Muses’ eyes.
(Ovid, Ars Amatoria, III, 161-168)
The fashion of wig-wearing in this period, as well as its emulation in the wig portrait bust, is widely attributed to Julia Domna...

Large Antique Hand Carved Sandstone Sculpture, Bust of Christ with Display Stand
Located in Lisse, NL
Top quality and mint condition bust sculpture from the early 1900s with maker's name.
This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. For it to have come our way felt like a blessing and to be able to offer it to the 1stdibs community in this amazing condition is an honour for us.
Our fair price for this museum worthy sculpture again includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days.
