Vintage "Fancy Japanese Lady" Doll Head Vase, American, Circa 1958 Scarce

About the Item

Hard to find and much sought after head vase; manufactured by the Tacoma Pottery Company (U.S.A.), circa late 1950's; depicts Japanese young lady dressed in formal traditional Japanese royal attire, with elaborate headdress and striking "gold leaf" like highlights all around. This is the rarer variation; slightly larger with the side headdress "gold leaf" decoration covering the side of the face and going all the way to her dress. Jet black hair, bright red lips, flesh tones, and a white dress complete the hand painted color scheme. To the rear of the headdress is a cavity (see images) to hold a small bouquet of flowers, sometimes artificial and often times real cut flowers with a "splash" of water; most often given as a gift for special occasions. The condition is simply excellent and all original; one would be hard pressed to locate a finer example. The colors are bright, the ruffles on the dress are nicely raised and composed, and there is no paint loss, except for three tiny spots to the back of the head, which are original to the kiln drying finish. There are no cracks; the usual slight crazing to the back of the headdress (desirable) authenticates 1950's era manufacture. Head vases (or sometimes referred to as "head vase planters") were made from the 1940's through the late 1960's. They were gifted to people on special occasions; birthdays, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, etc.; subject matter of the vase gifted was often "theme oriented". They would would have had flowers, as stated above, in the receptacle in back of the head. One has to be cognizant of originality and repairs; I have examined my head vases under black light ,and under a magnifying loop, and I guarantee the authenticity of the item to be as described. This is a great vintage item for those seeking something unique and different. Dimensions: 9 5/8" high x 7 1/2" wide x 4" deep Provenance: From my own personal collection; acquired 1990.

  • "Lady Seated in Chair Reading" Money Box/ Still Bank by a. Biagioni, Circa 1925
    Located in Incline Village, NV
Penny bank made by Italian Angelo Biagioni for the French market (see image with marking on the back of the chair), circa 1910. Biagioni, born in 1870, was a well known sculptor who crafted objects for resale to the European market. Money boxes (or still banks as they are called in America) were one of the more unique and more difficult items to find by this artist as most objects were basic uni-dimensional sculptered pieces. What makes it more rare is the unfortunate requirement to break and smash the bank open to get the coins out, as there was no mechanism to remove the money. The subject matter of the bank is that of a nicely dressed older lady seated in a chair reading a book. The bank is in all original condition and paint with no restoration or touch-up of any kind. This is a nice addition to any bank or toy collection, or simply to have as a "stand alone" unique item. Dimensions : 4 1/4" deep x 3 3/8" wide x 8 5/8" high. Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys and banks, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage still banks...
