About the Item
A sculpture by Man Ray titled 'Cadeau' in the shape of an iron with a row of nails protruding. Signed and inscribed with the edition number 2290/5000. In the original box, and certificate.
"In 'Cadeau' Man Ray takes a seemingly benign flat-iron and with a menacing row of nails, transforms it into something at once familiar and threatening. In expressing the conflicting subconscious desires to sooth and harm, Man Ray anticipates Surrealism.
First created in 1921 at the height of Paris Dada, the sculpture’s title, ‘Cadeau’ (French for ‘gift’) adds the characteristically Dadaist maniacal, nihilistic edge. Man Ray gifted composer Eric Satie with the original version and although that specific piece was lost, it has been immortalized through Man Ray’s photograph of it.'
A highly recognizable, provoking example of the artist's trademark assemblages.
Published by famous Italian Surrealist dealer Luciano Anselmo.

Prototype for Upon Unikat-Wandgarderobe by Stefan Diez
By Stefan Diez
Located in NYC, NY
Stefan Diez's prototype for the Upon series wall luggage / coat rack is a remarkable sculpture in itself. This prototype is made of wood, but the production example developed for a German manufacturer is made in metal making this example very unique. An excellent example of new German craft, innovation and design. Pictures included show the fascinatingly unique and innovative process by which this was made.
Stefan Diez was born 1971 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He worked shortly for Richard Sapper and later on two years for Konstantin Grcic before he opened his Munich office in 2003. (text by Andrej Kupetz and Stephan Ott)
