About the Item

A early 17th century French Gargoyle. Gargoyels were originally intented as waterspouts for churches and castles but soon were used as ornamentation. As they represented mythological creatures they were intended to remind the congregation that sinners and infidels had a one way ticket to the underworld. At the same time they sparkled the imigination of the contemporary and attracted people to keep on to their faith. This example with doglike features is finely carved and has a attractive patina with moss and salt encrustations. Please note that the wooden stand is not included due to shipping costs. The iron stand however is included.
