17th Spanish Sculpture in Carved Silver Gild Wood Saint Michel, Castilia
About the Item
One of a kind Baroque Spanish St Michel sculpture. A museum piece !!
The artistic imprint shows the typical Castilian traces in the conception and interpretation of the subject. This allows us to frame the attribution to a close circle of the stela left by Gregorio Fernández (1576-1636) in the very recognized Castilian circle.
The artist responsible for the creation of this magnificent carving has undoubtedly been trained in the footsteps of Fernández in the Castilian Baroque context. He powerfully remembers the Archangel San Miguel preserved in the reliquary of the Church of San Miguel de Valladolid; belonging to the first third of the seventeenth century.
Both carvings show great parallels in the spatial conception, in the configuration of the cloths and in the exquisite treatment of the gilding, which were applied in a restoration carried out at the end of the 19th century.
The sculptural quality is exquisite. Magnificent sculptural carving that represents the Archangel Saint Michael. Made at the end of the seventeenth century in the Castilian focus
The devotional image represented in the set is The Archangel Saint Michael defeating the devil. The archangel is represented dressed in silver military armor, sword, leggings and a flowing cloak of marked flight. He usually appears carrying a buckler and a baton; in this case he has been replaced by a sword and a blade with the inscription Q.S.D. ("Quis Sicur Deus", derivation of "Quis ut Deus", known as the archangel's battle cry, which expresses the heavenly call the confession of monotheistic faith before God and his triumph. Translation: "Who is like God?" ).
This symbolizes the victory of faith in the face of evil. The archangel Saint Michael is the defender of faith and truth, the governor of heaven and the prince of the heavenly choirs.
Evil in this case takes an anthropomorphic form (another common variant being a dragon). A human-like character with horns and a snake or dragon tail is observed.
It comes from a Spanish private collection .
A very important piece for an demanding collector.
Outstanding Castilian carving of the Archangel Saint Michael defeating the devil made at the end of the 17th century. The artistic imprint denotes the typical Castilian traces in the conception and interpretation of the theme. The sculptural quality is exquisite, this allows framing the attribution to a close circle of the stela left by Gregorio Fernández (1576 - 1636).
The artist responsible for the creation of this refined and extraordinary carving has undoubtedly formed following the footsteps of Fernández in the Castilian baroque context. He powerfully recalls the Archangel Saint Michael preserved in the reliquary of the Church of San Miguel in Valladolid; belonging to the first third of the 17th century. Both sizes present great parallelism in the spatial conception, in the configuration of the cloths and in the exquisite treatment of the gilding.
In the 19th century, the carving was redone in a restoration carried out at the end of the 19th century. Currently it has been restored to enjoy all its brilliance again (Dec. 2022).

Origin
This magnificent piece comes from a private collection in Valladolid. It is worth mentioning the literary work created by the writer Enrique López Vallejo (Valladolid, 1958) “La culpa fue de Baudelaire”. It is an autobiography with a sarcastic and erudite tone where he describes his life marked by the bourgeois, cultured and refined origin of his family.
On page 20, the author makes repeated reference to the sculpture of the Archangel Michael that his "grandmothers" had in the luxurious piano room. He also describes the provenance and origin of the piece, which was gilded by his great-great-grandfather, a specialist gilder who also did this work on the main altarpiece of the Church of Las Angustias (Valladolid).
