18th Century Italian Baroque Pity Pietà Sculpture by Piò Angelo Bolognese Circle

About the Item

A stunning Italian Polychrome Earthenware Pietà Pity dating back to 18th century of Bolognese circle of the master Angelo Gabriello Piò, Bologna 1690-1770, dating back to the first quarter of 18th century, in good age related condition, with minor restorations, a terracotta group deposition with beautiful, original polychromy and spectacular anatomy of the body of Christ. This antique terracotta pieta stands on shaped green and gilt poplar base. The Pietà by Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the most famous Renaissance Old Master artworks and has surely inspired this statue which shows Mary Magdalene holding the dead body of Christ after his crucifixion, death, and removal from the cross, but before he was placed in the tomb. This antique Baroque sculpture comes from a Milanese private collection, it has been restored near the symbols of passion on the base: cracks have been re-glued and bound from below, see closed-up pictures. Two fingers of Christ’s left hand have been replaced. Listed size refers to the group on the wooden basement measuring cm. 5 height by 71 width by 36 depth. The terracotta sculpture only measures: Measures: Height 36 cm by width: 59 cm by depth 35 cm Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago requires a governative license for export called Belle Arti.
