18th Century Continental Polychrome Terracotta Sculpture of the Kneeling Virgin

About the Item

A 17th-18th century continental painted terracotta sculpture of a kneeling Virgin in the manner of Angolo di Poli. This exquisite terracotta sculpture features a poignant depiction of the Virgin Mary. The red and blue clothes that she is wearing carry a certain heaviness that evokes the deep sense of grief she must be feeling. This is not a depiction of the Mother and Child, nor a Pietà but rather the personification of humility and surrender that the Virgin embodies at that moment. She is kneeling down, her hands joined in prayer, her eyes closed. She is a grieving mother who just lost her child. Seen from the back, the heaviness of the blue robe seems to be weighing on her. The purity of the lines and the simplicity of the means are perfect tributes to this powerful scene. With its humble treatment and lovely patina, this Continental 17th or 18th century polychrome terracotta sculpture of a kneeling Virgin will bring a deep and thoughtful presence to any home, whether placed atop a commode, buffet or side table.
