1920s Art Deco Sculpture in Bronze Signed 'Matto' 'Marcel Bouraine', Two Woman

About the Item

1920s Art Deco Sculpture in Bronze Signed ‘Matto’ (Marcel Bouraine), Two dancing young women with tambourines and light. The Bronze sculpture is on stepped Portoro Marble base and was created in France and signed “Matto” which was the pseudonym for Marcel Bouraine. Marcel Bouraine was a renowned French sculptor known for his Art Deco works during the 1920s and 1930s. This sculpture is made of bronze and is silver-gilt, which means it has a layer of gold or gold-colored material applied to the surface. The base is a most valuable type of marble- “Portoro” marble -which includes gold veining and which adds to its elegance and overall aesthetic. The depiction of two dancing young ladies with tambourines suggests a lively and dynamic composition, capturing the spirit of the Art Deco era. The addition of the French-style cameo glass light element creates an interplay of shadows and contrasts, further enhancing the sculpture’s visual impact. Marcel Bouraine (1886-1948) used the pseudonym ‘Matto’ for some of his works, but it is very rare to find his signature as ‘Matto’ instead of “Bouraine” This adds to the uniqueness and collectibility of the piece. He is known for his work in the Art Deco era, specifically small statuettes, lamps, bookends, and car “radiator mascots”.
