About the Item
French Empire or Napoléon III Patinated and Gilt Bronze Sarcophagus Mount, Egyptian Revival, circa 1800–1860
A finely cast and parcel-gilt French bronze furniture mount in the form of a miniature Egyptian sarcophagus, measuring 8.5" long × 1.5" wide × 1.5" deep. The figure is modeled with a serene, idealized face beneath a striated nemes headdress, the collar engraved and parcel-gilt with feathered details. Below, the body is decorated in horizontal registers of hieroglyphic-like reliefs, interspersed with gilt bands. The dark patinated ground provides dramatic contrast to the gilding, a hallmark of Empire and later Napoléon III decorative bronzes.
Such Egyptian Revival mounts reflect the profound influence of Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt (1798–1801), which inspired a generation of architects, designers, and bronziers in France. Sarcophagus motifs symbolized eternity, stability, and the grandeur of ancient civilizations, perfectly suited to the neoclassical ideals of the Empire. While the hieroglyphs here are decorative rather than epigraphically accurate, they draw upon sacred Egyptian symbols such as the ankh (life), was-scepter (power), and stylized falcons and serpents of divine protection.
This mount was likely intended for an important piece of furniture—perhaps a secrétaire, cabinet, or daybed—produced in the circle of Parisian ébénistes such as Jacob-Desmalter, with bronzes supplied by workshops like Thomire et Cie. Comparable mounts appear on beds, desks, and architectural caskets made for aristocratic interiors of the early 19th century.
Today, this mount stands as a collectible work in its own right: a rare surviving fragment of Empire-era Egyptomania, equally suited to display as an objet de vertu or to complement a collection of neoclassical furniture and decorative arts.

Egyptian Antique Bronze Seated Statue of Harpokrates
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
An interesting and unusual Egyptian bronze seated figure portraying the youthful god Harpokrates (Horus the child). The figure sits unclothed with legs bent and both arms resting by his sides. His face is indistinctly molded with a wide nose and with a sidelock of hair. He wears a Pschent crown. The figure, which is removable, has a later carved and fitted oak throne. The figure has an all over black patina. The figure does have some antique age although may be an Egyptian revival piece and would benefit from further research. We are therefore offering this as a later example and priced accordingly.
Harpokrates was one of the most popular deities in the Egyptian pantheon. He was the offspring...
