19th Century Buddhist Statue Monk Tang

About the Item

A Buddhist statue of Monk Tang. Xuanzang referred to as Tang, was a Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, traveler, and translator who traveled to India in the sixth century and described the interaction between Chinese Buddhism and Indian Buddhism during the early Tang dynasty. He was sent by the Emperor Taizong on a mission to Tianzhu (an ancient Chinese name for India) to fetch a set of Buddhist scriptures back to China for the purpose of spreading Buddhism in his native land. Usually depicted, on horse or with tiger and dragon staff in left hand. This statue shows Tang standing on top a dragon symbolizing strength over all obstacles as was needed for his journey. Monks head dress with ribbon blessing scroll behind ears as wings and to the back of left arm. This statue is solid and stable. Close inspection shows remnants of pigments with some wood ash lacquer applied in areas. Loses to finish, wood, and color. This type of statue created for adoration will have a section of the back hallowed out for a blessing to be placed inside. This particular Statue has not only the cavity created in the back but also in the head hallowed through to an open mouth. This is done in belief that the blessings will be released through body, mind, and spirit allowing the statue to speak through the mouth silently. In very good overall distressed condition. A wonderful example of Chinese Folk Art and culture.
