19th Century French Gilt Bronze Sculpture of a Baccante, by Jean-Léon Gérôme

About

This fine, lustrous sculpted figure is by Jean-Leon Gerome (French, 1824-1904), the widely celebrated Academic French painter of the 19th century, who began to create sculptural works in the latter stages of his illustrious career. The sculpture is known as 'Bacchante à L'Amour' or 'Bacchante à la Grappe'. It is cast entirely in ormolu and depicts a bacchante, a female follower of Bacchus, the Ancient Greek god of celebration and wine (who is known as Dionysis in Roman mythology). The bacchante is shown leaning against a thyrsos, which is a particular type of staff made of fennel, surmounted by an acorn and entwined with ivy. The thyrsos is associated with Bacchus for its symbolism of hedonism, fertility, prosperity and general pleasure. A putto climbs up the thyrsos as the bacchante holds a bunch of grapes above him. The sculpture is set upon a circular base which bears the signature 'JL. GEROME' and the number C739. The base also bears the stamp of Parisian foundry Siot-Decauville, Paris, where this sculpture was cast. It was designed in 1892 and cast in three sizes, of which this sculpture is the middle size. Literature: See Gerald M. Ackerman, The Life and Work of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1986), Fig. S.25, p. 318.
