19th Century French Patinated Bronze Statue "La Cruche Cassee" Signed M. Moreau

About the Item

Decorate a lady's office or a library shelf with this fine antiquity. Crafted in France circa 1880, this elegant bronze sculpture titled “La Cruche Cassée” (The Broken Pitcher), features a young beauty sited on a trunk form bench, and looking down at the broken pitcher. The statue has a titled plaque on the front base and is signed in the side M. Moreau, Hors Concours; it is further stamped by the foundry with "Medaille d' Honneur". The bronze figure is in excellent condition, with wonderful details, and adorns a rich patinated bronze finish. Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912), was one of the most important French sculptor in the academic style. Born in Dijon, he was the son of sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and his siblings included sculptors Hippolyte and Auguste Moreau. At age 21, he won the second Prize of Rome in 1842, and first exhibited in the 1848 Salon. Moreau finally received a medal of honor from the Salon in 1897. He was made mayor of the 19th arrondissement of Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honor. He died in Paris in 1912. Listed in the Benezit. 7" Diameter 19.5"H

A Patinated Bronze Statue of a Seated Greek Scholar signed Moreau
By Mathurin Moreau
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
A patinated cast bronze statue of a classically draped Greek scholar sitting sideways on a Klismos chair with the trademark griphons as front leg supports, the subject holding a pen in his right hand and an open scroll on the other left signed "Moreau" inscribed on one side of the chair. There are no visible foundry marks. Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium. Several of his works remain on public display in Paris, among them on the facade of the Gare du Nord...
