19th Century French Carved Terracotta Sculpture Composition Signed Baleaio

About the Item

Crafted in France, circa 1880, the antique clay composition features three cheerful children in traditional clothing and boots; they are sitting on a bench, laughing and talking with each other. This work of art has beautiful detailed work with polychrome and natural clay finish. A plaque on the front reading "Un Projet" (a project), is signed by the artist, Baleaio. The piece is in excellent condition with a rich patinated finish. Decorate a library shelf with this fine terracotta sculpture, or place it on a console or buffet. Measures: 12" W x 7" D x 12" H.

Wonderful details throughout. The sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated clay finish. Signed in the back, Cordier, and listed in the Benezit (see last picture). Charles Henri Joseph Cordier (1827-1905) was a French sculptor of ethnographic subjects. Cordier was a student of the Beaux-Arts in Paris and entered the workshop of Rude in 1847. He traveled extensively in Africa.
