After Edward Hodges Baily (1788-1867) Unsigned, Atelier /English School Work Last Quarter of 19th Century An exceptional posthumous hand carved copy of one of Edward Hodges Baily's renowned works “Eve at the Fountain”. The subject of this sculpture is taken from a passage in Milton's 'Paradise Lost', where Eve sees her own reflection in a lake for the first time, is surprised and wants to look at herself again. Further historical information on the original work: The first known marble version of Baily's 'Eve at the Fountain' was exhibited in 1822 and resides currently at the Bristol City Art Gallery. Another version of the work is in the collection of Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1853, Baily exhibits Eve at the Fountain at the Great Exhibition and then in 1862 at the International Exhibition. The scholarly Henry Weekes wrote of it as “one of the most beautiful examples of English ideal Sculpture as yet to be known to us.” Overall measurements: 19-inches wide x 14-inches high x 9.5-inches deep.
