About the Item

20th c., Pacific Northwest, a large stacked stone Inuit Peoples Inuksuk in the form of a human, on a polished stone base. The underside of the stacked stones are polished while the top and sides remain in their original rough form. This Inuksuk is very substantial in terms of heft. The word “inukshuk” means “in the likeness of a human.” For generations, Inuit have been creating these impressive stone markers on the vast Arctic landscape. Inukshuks serve several functions, including guiding travellers, warning of danger, assisting hunters and marking places of reverence.
