About the Item
This superb beautifully carved hardwood sculpture is of a native African Maasai warrior sitting in a semi kneeling pose. He has powerful masculine features and immaculate styled hair. He is semi naked with a muscular physique and is wearing a cloth robe buttoned over his shoulder on his chest. He is wearing heavy ear decorations and a tribal necklace. He is holding a spear in one hand and the other a club. This most impressive carving is made from a single large piece of rich dense timber, including the naturalistic base signed by the artist MWANLA. This large and decorative sculpture is in very good original condition with a very pleasing age related patina with some light shrinkage marks to the natural grain.

Late 19th Century Japanese Carved Hardwood Okimono of a Man, circa 1890
Located in Central England, GB
Late 19th C Japanese carved hardwood okimono of a man, circa 1890
This top quality and most impressive large scale Japanese carved hardwood okimono superbly depicts a characterful study of a delightfully crafty looking man. He is dressed simply in a robe. On his back, he has a rolled woven mat for resting and a turtle shell sun hat hangs below. On his side hanging from his waist sash, there is a simple hand fan made from woven palm leaves and around his neck, he is wearing a string of very large beads. This unfortunate character is on a journey and he seems to have lost or broken one sandal. His foot is sore and he is resting it on his gnarly walking stick. He has one arm outstretched and is holding out a large piece of fresh fruit as an offering perhaps to barter for new sandals...

An Indian Raj period carved figure of the Goddess Parvati, circa 1900
Located in Central England, GB
This superb hand carved sandalwood figure is Indian from the Raj period and dates to circa 1900.
It depicts the Hindu goddess Parvati, who represents love, fertility and devotion.
Parvati is beautiful. She is semi-naked and very ornate in her elaborate costume. She is holding her Deity son Ganesha, who is part human with an elephant’s head and is known in Hindu mythology as the remover of obstacles.
This remarkable figure group is carved from solid sandalwood, the very material that Hindu mythology suggests Parvati made her son Ganesha from.
The figure group is exceptionally well carved equal to what could be described in European circles as exhibition quality.
The finely carved figure is raised and mounted onto an elaborate carved and moulded stepped stand made from matching figured sandalwood.
This very fine piece of Hindu art...
