African Mumuye Carved Wood Iagalagana Tutelary Figure on Display Stand
About the Item
A carved wood Iagalagana figure by the Mumuye Peoples of Nigeria. These figures served as guardians and were often made to ensure the personal protection of their individual owners and also served as a personal confidant in troubled times as well as status symbols/prestige objects within the tribe. These figures display elongated features and exaggerated ear or lobe forms. They are often kept in a separate hut located on a family compound and are entrusted to family members with magical powers. The Iagalagana are believed to have divination, apotropaic and rain-making functions.
A rare and somewhat hard-to-find work.
This particular piece came from a collection of African art that was initially collected in the mid-1950s-1960s.
Would make for a great addition to any African art collection or eye-catching stand-alone accent piece.
