Alexandre Bigot Stoneware Patriotic Singing Frog Figure

About the Item

A rare and very stylish French glazed stoneware figure of a patriotic singing frog attributed to renowned ceramicist Alexandre Bigot (French, 1862-1927) and dating from the latter 19th century. Alexandre Bigot was a chemistry and physics instructor who was inspired by Chinese porcelain at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 and went on to set up a kiln in Mer, later moving to Paris. He produced glazes in variety of colors and finishes and produced work for many other notable artists of the time. This delightful figure of a frog is heavily made and raised on a rectangular base with a angled top on which it sits with its rear legs to either side. The body is in a tall seated position and the frog holds its head high with its mouth open while resting one of its front legs on its chest and the other on its knee. The figure has a wonderful rough textured finish with well modeled detail to the eyes and face and vertebrae. It has green glazes run over a cream glazed ground and is indistinctly signed to the lower side edge. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
