Head of a Woman, Ceramic Sculpture, American Studio Pottery 1970s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage Modernist ceramic sculpture features a head of young woman, made from raw terracotta and sculpted using the hands and small tools. The model's hair is arranged in low bun on the back of her head; she is looking straight forward with calm, serene expression on her face, delivering a real presence within the room. The bust is in very good vintage condition with beautiful patina commensurate with age. It is marked on the front with what we believe is a name of the model and the date, either 1971 or 1977, but it's missing the artist signature or stamp. The bust was found in an estate of American studio pottery collector in Western New York area with an extensive collection of early, Mid Century, and contemporary pottery, including multiple pieces signed Almond NY or created by artists working in that area. It is highly probable that the bust was created as a custom order by one of the studio potteries in the area of Almond or Alfred, renowned for the technical creativity and advancements in ceramic art in School of American Craftsman and Alfred University, as well as the early 1900s studio pottery movement in America, the Arts and Crafts phase of studio pottery, and Modernist movement.
