About the Item

This is a splendid antique Italian Florentine alabaster sculpture of a young sweetheart on a bench, entitled Wistfulness and circa 1880 in date. This magnificent antique sculpture is made from stunning white and red alabaster and grey white marble. It depicts a charming young lady sitting on a bench, resting her head in one hand with the other hand on the seat. Her curly hair is gently worn tied back from the face and she wears a Classic costume with her bare feet in sight. She is in a contemplative state, thinking carefully about something. The bench supports feature wonderful caryatids terminating in attractive paw feet. The attention to detail throughout this piece is second to none. Condition: In really excellent condition, with no chips or marks, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 47 x width 32 x depth 27 Dimensions in inches: Height 18.5 x width 12.6 x depth 10.6 Alabaster - is a name applied to varieties of two distinct minerals, when used as a material: gypsum and calcite also known as onyx-marble, Egyptian alabaster or Oriental alabaster. In general, but not always, ancient Alabaster in Egypt and the near and Middle East is calcite. Alabaster in medieval Europe is gypsum. Modern Alabaster is probably calcite, but may be either. Both are easy to 'work' and as both are slightly water soluble, have been used for making a variety of indoor artworks and carvings, as they will not survive long outdoors. The finer kinds of alabaster are employed largely as an ornamental stone, especially for ecclesiastical decoration and for the rails of staircases and halls. Alabaster is also used widely by the sculptors. In Europe, the centre of the alabaster trade is Florence, Italy. The Continental School, 19th century, comprised a group of artists active in this region in the period.
