Antique Japanese wooden Buddha statue [Fudou Myo-o] 不動明王 /Edo period

About the Item

This is a carved wooden statue of Fudo Myoo, thought to have been made around the Edo period. The material used is probably cypress. The material used is probably cypress, and it is evident that this is a carefully crafted Buddhist statue. Fudō Myōō (不動明王) is an important figure in Japanese esoteric Buddhism and is considered one of the guardian deities of Buddhism. He is believed to cut off people's doubts and evil and guide their hearts in the right direction. Holding a sword in his right hand to cut off worldly desires and a snare in his left hand, the figure stands with a halo of flames on his back, symbolizing his steadfast will and the power of his compassion. In this work, the rope is made of wire. This is a material often seen in other Fudo Myoo Buddhist statues. One of the charms of this work is the use of the “Gyokugan” technique for the eyes. Instead of painting with paint, a thin glass-like material is applied to the eyes, giving the Buddha statue life and a powerful expression that seems to convey a soul from within. This technique is particularly common in carefully crafted Buddhist statues. On the flame halo on the back, ink writing has been left behind, with the words “Fudo Myoo” in the center and the names of the dedicatees and the abbot of the time seemingly written on both sides of it. The main body of Fudo Myoo can be removed and inserted into the base. installed, it may move back and forth a little, but this does not interfere with viewing. The relatively compact size makes it ideal for display at an entranceway or in a corner of a living room. When displayed on a simple stand or low table, it will add a dignified accent to any interior, whether Japanese or Western. Since it is also meant to ward off evil, it is also recommended as a source of spiritual comfort. Repaired: There are traces of broken pieces glued together at the base of the sword and in part of the halo of the flame. The Acala body is a plug-in type, but it moves back and forth a little even when inserted. However, this does not seem to be a problem for viewing.
