Antique Stations of the Cross XI Jésus Est Cloué à La Croix 19th century France Circa 1850 Magnificent antique 19th century Stations of the Cross number 11 France circa 1850, Jesus gets nailed to the cross. Jesus is nailed to the cross, stripped of his garments, Jesus is violently thrown down on the Cross. His hands and his feet are nailed to it in the most cruel way. Jesus remains silent, because it so pleases his heavenly Father. He suffers patiently, because he suffers for you. How do you act in sufferings and trials? How fretful and impatient, how full of complaints are you! Saint Francis said, it is only in giving to others that we will receive. Jesus, you gave up your life, but since I am unable to do great things, let me do small things with great love. The Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as the Way of Sorrows or the Via Crucis, refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. The stations grew out of imitations of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem which is believed to be the actual path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary. The object of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual Pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ . It has become one of the most popular devotions and the stations can be found in many western churches, including Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist and Roman Catholic ones. Commonly, a series of 14 images will be arranged in numbered order along a path and the faithful travel from image to image, in order, stopping at each station to say the selected prayers and reflections. This will be done individually or in a procession most commonly during Lent, especially on Good Friday in a spirit of reparation for the sufferings and insults that Jesus endured during his passion. This remarkable and very finely carved study of the biblical figure of St Paul, The Apostle who was originally Saul of Tarsus born BCE. Tarsus in Cilicia (now in Turkey). He died circa 62 – 64 CE in Rome, Italy. He was one of the leaders of the first generation Christians and was often considered to be the most important person after Jesus in the history of Christianity. This highly accomplished wood carving is a difficult material for detailing English oak. It shows him standing barefoot and dressed in simple robes with a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. His face has been well captured with a good expression, detailed hair and a long beard. The small scale of this figure would indicate it was not originally church decoration...
