About the Item

Very rare terracotta figurine of Death and Merchant - after the Zizenhausen Danse Macabre or Totentanz aus Zizenhausen or Basel Dance of Death cycle. I have two figures from the forty-two figure series modeled by Anton Sohn (1769-1840) in 1822. The figures follow the prints by Matthäus Merian the Elder first published in 1623 after the frescoes of the cemetery walls of the Dominican Abbey in Basel. This figure was made and painted by Anton Sohn and signed with his initials at his workshop in in Zizenhausen near Stockach, Germany between 1822 - 1840. Flattened to the reverse, colorfully painted with attention to the smallest detail. The plinths bear glued on paper inscriptions with the accompanying texts in French for Swiss or French customers. Measures 12.5 cm high x base 8.5 cm x 3 cm deep. In excellent condition, no damage or repairs. Second original figure of Death and Herzog dates to same period and sells separately. > > Most of the items that we sell at Atelier De Montplaisir are not new at all if not stated otherwise.
