About the Item

The Archangel Michael, head of the celestial militias, is represented in his fight against the dragon, which is told in the Apocalypse, or against the devil himself and the other fallen angels (as the present work). Normally, he is shown with a sword or a spear, and in military attire, either a Roman-inspired or Baroque style. In this scene, he appears fighting on foot or, as in the present case, flying. The Counter-Reformation makes it the emblem of the Roman Church in struggle and defeating Protestant heresy, giving a new rise to its worship and its representation. In the case of the monster, it may have a human form (in which case the subject of the fight against the rebellious angels) or as a beast (Revelation). In the present example, it has a humanoid face, horns and elongated ears, wings, torso of beast and long tail finished in serpent's head. The figure of the warrior archangel responds to a variant of models already known in the painting of the 17th century (and in the rest of techniques), differentiated from the rest by the position of the arms. The diagonal-based composition of the carving, the movement of its vestments and the balance in which it is with one foot on the monster are characteristic of this type of images in the Baroque. So are the abundant gilding and the type of the Archangel's garment, very rich as corresponds to a prominent member of the heavenly hierarchy. The work was carried out in a center of importance among those of the Spanish colonies in America, as evidenced by its similarity with examples of Seville (area of great influence on the continent) and certain details. For example, it was customary for this type of costume in sculptures of that origin, the angel's factions, the Mannerist posture of the same and the burden that results with the cloths and the arrangement of them. Numerous specimens of carvings are preserved with the theme of St. Michael the Archangel in his struggle against the monster, both in Spain and America. For example, the one preserved in the National Sculpture Museum (Valladolid) from the Convent of the Incarnation, the one painted by Luis Juárez of the National Museum of Art of Mexico or, previous, The Great Saint Michael painted by Rafael and in the Louvre Museum (Paris)." · Size: 58x20x86 cms.
