About

Rare and lovely bronze sculpture depicting the Hindu beauty Goddess Kali. Exquisitely detailed on Brazilian green-onyx plinth. Signed and in perfect condition.

Josef Lorenzl (1882 -1950) was a Viennese sculptor and ceramicist of the Art Deco Period. He began his career working at the a foundry at the Vienna Arsenal (military storage complex) where he learned the techniques of bronze casting. While there he produced numerous sculptures, in ivory as well as bronze, the majority of his pieces inspired by the female form. He was also a gifted ceramicist, working from a studio on the Goldscheider company grounds. As with his bronze pieces, Lorenzl's ceramic works were in great demand and, for many collectors, became the personification of the Art Déco period.
