Art Déco German Glazed Porcelain Sculpture of a Sitting Buddha by Rosenthal

About the Item

Art Déco/Chinoiserie german glazed porcelain sculpture of a meditative sitting Buddha designed by Richard Förster for Rosenthal By: Richard Förster, Rosenthal Material: porcelain, ceramic, enamel Technique: glazed, pressed, molded, enameled Dimensions: 3.5 in x 5.5 in x 8 in Date: early 20th century, circa 1920 Style: Art Déco, Chinoiserie Place of origin: Germany This glazed porcelain sculpture depicts a meditating Buddha seated in the lotus position upon a cushion. The serene figure is simply attired in a draped robe with eyes closed. The white-on-white Chinoiserie work is rendered with clean lines and smoothly finished surfaces, supported on an unadorned base. Signed by the designer Richard Förster and manufacturer Rosenthal underneath. Created in Germany circa 1920, it embodies the sleek aesthetic and eastern influences popular in Art Déco style of the period. Founded in 1879, the firm of Rosenthal, from Bavaria, established itself as a premier producer of fine porcelain wares and figures in the early 20th century. Skillful design and quality manufacturing techniques come together beautifully in this blanc de chine Buddha sculpture.
