Bacchus and Satyr on Donkey Sculpture by Kai Nielsen for Bing & Grøndahl 1910s

About the Item

An exceptional sculpture by Kai Nielsen featuring a clear allegory filled with symbolism and social critique, characteristic of Nielsen’s style, masterfully developed in his "Wine Lovers" series created for Bing & Grøndahl in 1912 in Copenhagen. Modeled in stoneware, this piece depicts a mythological scene where Bacchus, laden with grapes, falls asleep atop a donkey, while a satyr climbs up the animal’s neck. Each of these elements represents different aspects of human nature and society. Bacchus, the god of wine and revelry, often symbolizes liberation and pleasure, but here may also serve as a critique of excess and decadence, appearing in a less glorified state, overwhelmed by the effects of indulgence. The satyr, clinging to the donkey's ear, often represents lust, primitive instincts, and opportunism, seizing the situation for his own gain without regard for the donkey’s burden or Bacchus's oblivion—symbolizing manipulation and control. The donkey, associated with humility and burden, reflects servitude or exploitation within society. With a realism bordering on the provocative, Nielsen fuses symbolic elements from Art Nouveau and Classicism with the emerging Art Deco’s solidity and expressiveness, creating a work of great symbolic depth that demonstrates a bold and masterful artistic statement. Truly, an exceptional piece for lovers of Scandinavian sculpture and art.
