Baroque Era Sculpture of an Angel, Swabia, 1700s, partially gilded. Detailed sculpture of an angel which is leaning forward with perspectively formed eyes. This indicates a position of this sculpture above the altar. Provenance of Swabia, a region in southwest Germany near Lake Constance. In the 1700s Swabia is a politically and culturally diverse region which consists of several smaller counties, principalities, free cities, and monasteries. Instead of one main center of cultural production, several cities and villages simultaneously developed their own distinct style. During the barqoue era sculptures were inseparable parts of the décor of a park, a palace, or a church. The sculpture's design corresponded with its surroundings. Due to their expressive and dynamic nature, sculptures were part of the calculated dramatic effect of baroque interiors. The baroque era created artworks, which were much more dynamic and expressive than earlier sculptures. Many of them - especially wooden sculptures - were extensively and elaborately painted, using bright and vivid colors and gilding to enhance their artistic effect. As there was only daylight or dim candles or oil lamps to illuminate the interior of a church in the 1700s, the sculptors used the pleats of the clothes of angel or saint's sculptures to create dramatic effects of light and shadow, which changed during the course of the day and constitued an extraordinary liveliness of the churches. Cisalpine sculptors used the Italian Renaissance and baroque as artistic example (e.g. Michelangelo or Gian Lorenzo Bernini). Early during the baroque era artworks and sculptures for church interiors were imported directly from Italy or the Netherlands. Starting in the 1680s Southern Germany -and Swabia in particular- developed its own centers of the creation of first-grade art. Artists like Balthasar Permoser, Ignaz Guenther, and Egid Quirin Asam were at the forefront of this development.
