About the Item

Baroque Wax Plaque/Carving of Adoration of the Magi Italian School 18th Century or Older Pigmented Wax, Wood, Carved and Inlaid Ebony, Glass A remarkable Baroque wax relief of The Adoration of the Magi, attributed to the Italian School, dating back to the 18th century or possibly earlier. This intricate wax carving measures 7 inches high by 5.5 inches wide and vividly captures one of the most cherished biblical scenes, where the Magi honor the newborn Jesus. As one of the two biblical accounts of Christ’s birth, The Adoration of the Magi became a popular subject in European art, symbolizing the Incarnation and God’s embodiment in human form. The wax carving displays meticulous attention to detail, characteristic of Italian Renaissance artistry, where modeling in wax was held in high esteem. Many master artists utilized wax as both a preparatory medium for other sculptures and as a standalone material. Despite its age, this piece remains nearly entirely intact, with only minor scattered losses, preserving the delicate features and expressiveness of the figures. The relief is elegantly housed in what may be its original, subtly carved ebony frame, inlaid and complete with a glass front for protection. The frame itself measures 11.5 inches high by 10 inches wide and 2.25 inches deep, adding to the piece’s historical integrity and appeal. This rare artwork serves as a testament to the craftsmanship of Renaissance artisans and stands as an exceptional addition to any fine art collection, ready to be displayed and enjoyed.
